“We look for medicine to be an orderly field of knowledge and procedure. But it is not. It is an imperfect science, an enterprise of constantly changing knowledge, uncertain information, fallible individuals, and at the same time lives on the line. There is science in what we do, yes, but also habit, intuition, and sometimes plain old guessing. "—Atul Gawande

Dear fellow BVs,
Is anyone as obsessive as me?
I know there are mysteries of the human body that we can’t possibly understand, but it doesn’t stop me from trying. I spent two hours of my cherished Saturday yesterday writing about the impact of the thyroid on anxiety (and vice versa).
Am I actually making any progress? At times I feel like a lone satellite, orbiting disconnected planets of information. I land on promising information, only to find out the medical doctor behind the words is a notorious anti-vaxxer.
I’m the weirdo at a party who interviews internists, cross-examining while plying them with drinks in order to try to understand why we don’t know more about the effects of stress on the body.
Nothing says party like a microphone in your face.
I’ve decided to put some of my odd obsessions out into the world to find other people like me—people not satisfied by medical hand-waving. I have so many questions.  How are neurotransmitters related to the endocrine system, exactly? Are they kissing cousins?
I’m a dilatant and autodidact, but it’s gonna take a George Plimpton-level of energy and curiosity to track down the information I desire.
At the same time, I know I’m not the only one yearning to understand how hormones exacerbate anxiety symptoms. If you’re a systems thinker who wants to know how one part of life affects another, or if you can just relate to the obsession I’m describing above, let me know by thumbs-upping this newsletter or commenting on this forum discussion. Let’s share knowledge, fellow weirdos.
Love, Meredith
